The Scrum Master role
The Scrum Master helps a team work with Scrum, the most widely used agile framework for delivering value iteratively. They are neither a project manager nor a team lead in the hierarchical sense: they are a facilitator who removes impediments, shields the team from disruption and helps it improve continuously.
In practice, the Scrum Master runs the Scrum events (sprint, daily scrum, review, retrospective), supports the Product Owner on backlog management, and spreads the agile culture beyond the team. It is a central role in organisations adopting agility.
What is the PSM I certification?
PSM I (Professional Scrum Master I) is Scrum.org's certification attesting a solid understanding of Scrum as defined in the Scrum Guide, the official reference written by the creators of Scrum. It is the most rigorous Scrum certification on the market: it assesses genuine understanding of the framework, not memorisation.
Unlike the PMP, PSM I has no eligibility requirement: it is open to all. But its exam demands a fine understanding, which makes preparation essential.
Who is the PSM I for?
The PSM I is for anyone involved in an agile approach, whether you are aiming for the Scrum Master role or simply want to work effectively in a Scrum team.
- Future Scrum Masters and agile team facilitators
- Project managers moving into agility
- Development team members who want to master Scrum
- Managers and Product Owners working with Scrum teams
The PSM I exam
The PSM I exam has 80 questions to complete in 60 minutes, with an 85% passing score. It is taken entirely online, whenever you want, from home: there is no test centre to attend. Questions are mostly in English.
A notable advantage: once earned, the PSM I certification is for life. There is no renewal, no annual fee and no units to accumulate, unlike some other certifications.
How much does the PSM I cost?
As with any certification, the cost splits in two: the preparation training on one hand, the exam fee paid to Scrum.org on the other. At Atypix, the training price depends on the country of enrolment:
| Senegal | F CFA 504,450 |
| Benin | F CFA 450,000 |
Price of the training and support. The examination fee paid to PMI is invoiced separately.
How to prepare, and why with Atypix
As PSM I is open to all but demanding at the exam, good preparation makes the difference. Atypix is a Professional Scrum Trainer (PST) accredited by Scrum.org: the training is delivered by a trainer authorised by Scrum.org itself, with official material.
The training is bilingual French / English and is taken in person in Montreal, Dakar and Cotonou or remotely. As the exam is online, no travel is needed to sit it, wherever you are.
