PgMP and PfMP certifications: the complete guide

PMI's advanced certifications for program management (PgMP) and portfolio management (PfMP), their requirements, exams, prices and how to prepare in French-speaking West Africa.

PgMP and PfMP: what are they?

The PgMP (Program Management Professional) and PfMP (Portfolio Management Professional) are PMI's advanced certifications, beyond project management. The PgMP validates the ability to lead a program: coordinating several related projects to reach a strategic goal. The PfMP validates portfolio management: choosing and balancing the right investments for the organisation.

These are high-level certifications, aimed at very experienced profiles.

Who are the PgMP and PfMP for?

These certifications target executives who steer beyond the single project.

  • Program and portfolio directors
  • Senior PMO leads
  • Executives aligning projects with strategy
  • Seasoned project managers taking on more responsibility

Experience requirements (high)

The PgMP and PfMP require substantial experience, well above the PMP, and include an application review (panel review) before the exam. The conditions below give the order of magnitude; PMI remains the authoritative source.

  • PgMP: several years of experience in both project management AND program management.
  • PfMP: several years of professional experience AND portfolio management experience.
  • An application review (panel) precedes the exam in both cases.

The PgMP and PfMP exams

Once the application is accepted, the exam is taken through the Pearson VUE network: online with proctoring or at an authorised centre such as Dakar. Both exams cover PMI's program and portfolio management frameworks.

The certification is then maintained through PDUs.

How much do the PgMP and PfMP cost?

The cost includes the preparation training and the fees paid to PMI. At Atypix, the training price depends on the country of enrolment:

SenegalF CFA 1,420,000
BeninF CFA 1,400,000

Price of the training and support. The examination fee paid to PMI is invoiced separately.
