CAPM Certification: the complete guide

PMI's entry-level project management certification: what it covers, who can take it, how the exam works, how much it costs and how to prepare in French-speaking West Africa.

What is the CAPM certification?

The CAPM (Certified Associate in Project Management) is PMI's entry-level project management certification. It attests mastery of the fundamentals: vocabulary, processes, predictive and agile approaches. It is the first recognised milestone for those starting out or structuring their practice.

The CAPM is often the first step before aiming for the PMP: it opens the door to the profession without requiring the project leadership experience the PMP demands.

Who is the CAPM for?

The CAPM is for people starting out in project management, or taking part without yet leading projects.

  • Students and recent graduates targeting a first project role
  • Project team members who want to formalise their basics
  • Professionals reskilling into project management
  • Future PMP candidates who want a first certification

Eligibility requirements

The CAPM is far more accessible than the PMP: it requires no project leadership experience. The conditions below are those in force at the time of writing; PMI remains the authoritative source.

  • A secondary school diploma (or equivalent) at minimum.
  • 23 hours of project management education, to complete before the exam (exactly what our course covers).
  • No prior project leadership experience required.

The CAPM exam

The CAPM exam has 150 questions to complete in 3 hours. It covers project management fundamentals, including predictive, agile and business analysis. It is taken online with proctoring or in an authorised Pearson VUE test centre.

Once earned, the CAPM is maintained with 15 PDUs (professional development units) every 3 years.

How much does the CAPM cost?

The cost splits in two: the preparation training and the exam fee paid to PMI. At Atypix, the training price depends on the country of enrolment:

SenegalF CFA 500,000
BeninF CFA 450,000

Price of the training and support. The examination fee paid to PMI is invoiced separately.
