The PMP in Montreal: sectors and community
Much of Montreal's project work happens in the sectors that Montréal International lists as its priorities: aerospace, life sciences, artificial intelligence and climate technologies. These projects tend to be long, governed by standards and often spread across several sites, and the teams running them combine predictive and agile delivery. The Project Management Professional (PMP) from the Project Management Institute covers predictive, adaptive and hybrid approaches, which matches how these teams actually work.
The local community is well organized. According to its pre-budget brief to Québec's Ministry of Finance, the PMI Montréal chapter has about 5,000 members across Québec, describes itself as the largest French-speaking chapter in the PMI network and has been active since 1977. For a Montreal project manager, it gives you peers who use the same vocabulary as the exam.
PMI eligibility requirements
The PMI decides who can sit the exam, not Atypix. According to the official PMP page, you need:
- with a four-year university degree: 36 months of experience leading projects, plus 35 hours of project management education or the CAPM certification;
- with a secondary diploma or equivalent: 60 months of experience leading projects, plus 35 hours of education or the CAPM.
Your experience must fall within a recent period set by the PMI, so check that period on the PMI page when you apply. You don't need to be a PMI member to take the exam. The Atypix PMP course is 35 hours, which matches the required amount of education. The PMI has announced that from December 1, 2026, live instructor-led hours must come from a PMI-approved provider. The details are on its new exam page. Atypix is a PMI ATP Premier (Authorized Training Partner).
The exam since July 2026
The PMI launched a new version of the exam on July 9, 2026. The 2026 Examination Content Outline sets out the format:
| Item | What the PMI publishes |
|---|---|
| Questions | 180, of which 170 are scored and 10 are unscored pretest items |
| Time | 240 minutes, with two optional 10-minute breaks |
| Domains | People 33%, Process 41%, Business Environment 26% |
| Delivery | Pearson VUE test centre or online |
According to the PMI's new exam page, Business Environment grows from 8% to 26% of the exam. That means more questions on value, strategy, sustainability and the use of AI in projects, and the course is weighted the same way.
The PMI's PMP page lists French among the exam languages, so in Montreal you can take the exam in English or in French. The same page publishes the exam fees in US dollars, with separate member and non-member rates. The fees changed in 2026, so check the current amount when you register.
Funding: Québec's 1% training law
Québec's Act to promote workforce skills development and recognition, known as the 1% training law, applies to employers whose annual payroll is over $2 million. According to Revenu Québec, these employers must spend at least 1% of that payroll on eligible training. If they spend less, they pay the difference into the workforce skills development fund (FDRCMO).
As BDO's summary of the law explains, training that builds the skills required for a project management role can count toward that 1%. The Commission des partenaires du marché du travail guide explains which expenses qualify, and it is up to the employer to confirm. When a whole team is trained, HR usually runs this calculation. If your employer is not covered by the law, funding is something to discuss with them directly.
Format and time zone
Montreal is on Eastern Time (UTC-5 in winter, UTC-4 in summer). You can take the course at the Atypix Montreal office or as a virtual class, and the date and format of each session are listed above on this page. The virtual class works for people based elsewhere in Québec or who travel often. You can take the exam at a Pearson VUE test centre or online from home, at a time that fits your schedule.
After the exam: keeping your PMP
The PMP renews every three years. Under the PMI Continuing Certification Requirements handbook, you need 60 professional development units (PDUs) per cycle. At least 35 of them must be education PDUs, including at least 8 in each of the three Talent Triangle areas (Ways of Working, Power Skills, Business Acumen). A course such as the PMI-ACP earns PDUs and adds agile depth to your profile, which is useful in Montreal's software and AI teams.
