The PMP in Dakar: sectors and roles
In Dakar, many leadership roles sit in project based organizations: donor funded programs and public project management units, infrastructure and transport works, telecom operators, banks and insurers, and energy. Recruiters in these sectors know the PMP from the Project Management Institute because it shows experience that PMI has reviewed and a shared vocabulary, whether a project runs predictive, agile or hybrid.
Before you commit, read the job postings and terms of reference you are targeting: some require the PMP, others list it as an asset. If your work is mostly agile, compare it with the PMI-ACP; if you are early in your career, PMI's CAPM can be a first step.
Check your eligibility before you enroll
PMI sets the requirements and publishes them on its official PMP page. They combine an education level, a length of experience leading projects that depends on that level (for example 36 months with a four year degree, 60 months with a secondary diploma), and 35 hours of project management education or the CAPM certification. The experience must be recent, within the window PMI states, and months where projects overlap count once. Requirements change, so check PMI's page again on the day you apply.
Two points need care for a candidate in Dakar.
- Your degree: PMI works with broad education levels. Map your Senegalese degree to those categories before you work out the experience you need.
- Your evidence: PMI can select an application for audit and ask a supervisor to confirm each project you list. If you worked for several employers, or in a project unit that has since closed, track down the people who can sign now.
The Atypix course is 35 hours long, which is the amount PMI requires for the education part.
The exam: format and sitting it in Dakar
Since July 2026 the exam has followed a new outline. PMI's official Examination Content Outline states 180 questions across three domains: People, Process and Business Environment, with Business Environment now carrying far more weight than before. Prepare on the 2026 outline, not on practice tests written for the previous exam.
PMI offers the exam at a Pearson VUE test center or online. In Dakar, Atypix operates Pearson VUE test center 90280. Testing online from home needs a stable connection and a private room for the whole exam, and a power or network outage mid exam would put you in a tough spot. Sitting it at the center removes that risk.
PMI sets the exam fee in US dollars, with a lower rate for PMI members. Check the current amount on the PMP page and ask the Dakar office what the price shown on this page covers.
Funding your preparation in Senegal
Employer sponsorship through the company training plan is the most common route. In Senegal, the vocational and technical training fund, 3FPT, funds continuing training for private sector employees. In July 2026 it signed funding agreements with the CNP, CNES and UPIC employer groups in Dakar, covering close to 90 percent of the cost of eleven training programs for 911 employees from 36 companies. If your company belongs to an employer group, ask HR whether a 3FPT request could include your preparation: the fund decides which programs it accepts.
For your budget, count the course, the exam fee paid to PMI in dollars and, if you choose it, PMI membership, which lowers both the exam and renewal fees.
Training in Point E, on Dakar time
The course runs in person at the Atypix office in Dakar's Point E district; the address and sessions are shown on this page. Dakar stays on GMT all year with no daylight saving time, so live resources from Montreal run four hours behind in summer and five in winter.
The PMI Senegal Chapter celebrated its tenth anniversary in November 2025 and that year ran twelve international webinars and three in person events. Its members include project managers, PMO staff, engineers, executives and students, which makes it a useful network before and after the exam.
After you pass: renewal
The PMP runs on three year cycles: you report 60 professional development units (PDUs) and pay a renewal fee, under PMI's maintenance rules. Further training, chapter activities and professional practice can count when they fit the categories PMI defines.
