What the PMP means for a project manager in Abidjan
PMI has an active local community. According to the Ivorian news agency AIP, the PMI Côte d'Ivoire Chapter was founded in 2015 and has more than 800 members. In May 2026, its president, Adou Simon, summed up the local market with a question: the country has major infrastructure ambitions, but do we have enough professionals able to deliver them with excellence? In the sectors where Abidjan hires project managers (construction and infrastructure, energy, telecoms, banking), experience is what decides. The PMP does not replace that experience; it makes it verifiable. PMI reviews your background before it lets you sit the exam, and lists credential holders in a public registry that any employer can check.
PMI eligibility requirements
For the exam launched on 9 July 2026, PMI counts project management experience from the last ten years (up from eight). The number of months required depends on your education, according to the 2026 PMP Examination Content Outline:
| Education | Project management experience |
|---|---|
| Secondary diploma | 60 months |
| Associate-level degree or equivalent | 48 months |
| Bachelor's degree or equivalent | 36 months |
| Degree from a PMI GAC-accredited program | 24 months |
You also need 35 hours of project management education, or the CAPM certification, as stated on PMI's PMP page. The Atypix course is 35 hours long.
Ivorian degrees and the application
PMI works with international equivalents. A BTS, a DUT or a three-year LMD licence does not automatically fall into one row of the table: PMI decides when it reviews your application. Describe your projects in actual months, never count overlapping projects twice, and give a reachable supervisor for each one. PMI can select an application for audit at random and ask for supporting documents, including proof of your 35 hours of education.
Taking the exam from Côte d'Ivoire
According to the 2026 outline, the exam has 180 questions, 10 of them unscored pretest items, in 240 minutes with two 10-minute breaks. It covers three domains: People (33%), Process (41%) and Business Environment (26%).
There are two options. The first is a Pearson VUE test center: before you pick a date, check the Pearson VUE site for PMI for open centers and available slots. Atypix runs its own Pearson VUE center in Dakar, which is an option if you travel in the region. The second is the online proctored exam from Abidjan: allow more than four hours including check-in, a closed room, a stable connection and backup power (a UPS or a fully charged laptop), since an outage during the exam can end your session.
Once your application is approved, PMI gives you one year to take the exam, with up to three attempts, according to the PMI Certification Handbook.
Exam fee and renewal
PMI sets its own exam fee. The handbook explains that it varies with PMI membership and region, so check the amount shown for Côte d'Ivoire when you register, and compare the member and non-member prices.
The PMP is renewed every three years by earning 60 professional development units (PDUs), at least 35 of them in education. PMI's CCR Handbook sets the renewal fee at USD 60 for members and USD 150 for non-members.
Employer funding through the FDFP
In Côte d'Ivoire, employers pay a continuing vocational training levy of 1.2% of payroll to the Direction générale des Impôts (the tax administration), which collects it; the Fonds de développement de la formation professionnelle (FDFP) then handles training funding requests. A company that pays the levy can ask the Fund to cover training for its staff: Fraternité Matin reports that 12,647 companies had approved training plans in 2023. Applications are filed on the FDFP CONNECT platform, with deadlines published on the FDFP website. If you are an employee, ask your HR department to include PMP preparation in the company's next training plan; approval rests with the FDFP.
A virtual classroom on Abidjan time
Abidjan is on GMT all year, with no daylight saving time. Before you enroll, check which time zone the session times on this page are given in. If the class also includes participants in Montréal, the gap is four hours in summer and five in winter. Plan your weeks so you attend all 35 hours, since those are the hours that count in your PMI application.
After the PMP
If your projects are moving toward agile or hybrid delivery, the PMI-ACP is the natural complement to the PMP. Many Abidjan employers and international organizations work in both French and English, so a credential recognized worldwide, with a public registry entry, carries weight in either language.
