Resource Performance Domain: Plan, Estimate, Acquire, and Control Resources
PMBOK v8 Definition
The Resources Performance Domain encompasses the processes of Plan Resource Management, Estimate Resources, Acquire Resources, Lead the Team, and Monitor and Control Resourcing. These processes ensure that human and physical resources are identified, estimated, acquired, developed, and controlled throughout the project lifecycle. They are part of the Execution and Monitoring & Controlling Process Groups within the Resources Performance Domain.
Why It Matters for the Exam
Resource management questions appear frequently on the PMI exam, particularly in situational scenarios where you must determine which process to apply (e.g., when a team member leaves, when equipment is unavailable, or when resource utilization is tracked). The exam tests your ability to distinguish between planning resources, estimating them, acquiring them, leading the team, and monitoring/controlling them. Expect 5–8 questions on resource-related processes.

- Common Confusion: Do not confuse "Estimate Resources" (determining quantities and types) with "Acquire Resources" (obtaining them). Estimate comes before acquire.

Typical PMI Exam Example
You are managing a construction project. During the planning phase, you need to determine the number of workers, types of equipment, and quantities of materials required. Which process are you performing? Answer: Estimate Resources. Later, you need to hire those workers and rent that equipment. Which process? Answer: Acquire Resources.
PMI Exam Traps
- Trap: Confusing "Acquire Resources" with "Develop Team"
- Reality: Acquire Resources is about obtaining team members and physical resources. Develop Team (part of Lead the Team) is about improving competencies and interaction.
- Trap: Thinking "Estimate Resources" produces a budget
- Reality: Estimate Resources produces Resource Requirements (types and quantities). Cost estimation uses these requirements.
- Trap: Assuming "Monitor and Control Resourcing" only tracks people
- Reality: It tracks both human and physical resources (equipment, materials, supplies).
- Trap: Confusing "Plan Resource Management" with "Estimate Resources"
- Reality: Plan Resource Management is the high-level plan for HOW to manage resources. Estimate Resources is the detailed estimation of WHAT resources are needed.
