Project Management Focus Areas are five groups of related processes and activities that organize project management work: Initiating, Planning, Executing, Monitoring and Controlling, and Closing. These Focus Areas are implemented using formal processes, informal practices, or other policies, procedures, or techniques. The areas involve iterative, continuous, and/or overlapping actions performed when planned or needed during the project and/or in each phase of the project.

Why It Matters for the Exam

The Five Focus Areas (often called Process Groups) appear in 30-40% of PMI exam questions, typically in situational questions asking which group of processes a specific activity belongs to. The exam frequently tests your ability to distinguish between Focus Areas and project phases, and to recognize that these areas overlap and interact dynamically throughout the project life cycle.
